PORT HUENEME, Calif.—Twenty-six undergraduate and graduate students, representing schools across the nation, are currently on board Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division (NSWC PHD), contributing to fleet support and leveraging learning opportunities as they prepare for the future through Navy internship programs.

The majority of the interns are participating in the Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP), sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), while others are participating in the Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship Program, which is a scholarship-for-service program through the Department of Defense (DOD).

"Our summer interns have a great opportunity to experience first-hand the type of work NSWC PHD does in support of our fleet,” said NSWC PHD Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Coordinator, Ramon Flores. “The internship programs also provide hiring managers with a unique insight into our possible future workforce."

NSWC PHD Technical Director, Paul Mann, spoke to the interns at an informal meet-and-greet, June 29, sharing key principles for success.

“When you come to work at NSWC PHD or for the government, it’s no longer about you, it’s about how you interact with others and build upon something greater than yourself,” said Mann. “It’s important to maintain a sense of responsibility on a large scale, as we are part of the world’s greatest Navy.”

“Readiness is a key attribute,” he continued, elaborating on five crucial elements. “Everything we deliver to the U.S. Navy has to be ready, effective and functional; acceleration, we must go faster and do things to accelerate the delivery of capabilities; we embrace a culture of affordability here, and it’s important that you understand finance and economics to steward resources on behalf of the citizens of the United States; the human aspect, we want to be a program of attraction and build an environment where everybody will give their best effort and share their best self with us…be a good team mate; and cyber, learn it, know it, fundamentally—make sure our systems and capabilities are not vulnerable to attack, this is an all-hands evolution.”

“You are our future,” he concluded. “There are no limits to the opportunities for you here.”

The SMART Scholarship Program supports undergraduate and graduate students pursuing technical degrees in STEM disciplines. The program aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working at DOD laboratories and to produce the next generation of DOD Science and Technology leaders. SMART scholars receive a cash award up to $38,000, full tuition and related expenses, an allowance for health insurance and books, internships and post-graduation career opportunities.

“The SMART Program is one of the best scholarships that I am aware of,” said Engineering Workforce Competency Lead and Career Field Manager, Liz Awa.

“The SMART program is also great because you have a guaranteed job waiting for you after graduation,” said Melissa Keckley, a SMART intern serving in the Test and Evaluation Engineering and Operations Branch of Ship Defense and Expeditionary Warfare Department. “This is more valuable than I realized and really took the stress away during my senior year of college.”

“I didn't realize how many opportunities the Naval Sea Systems Command has available around the country and even world,” Keckley added.

NREIP is designed to encourage students to pursue science and engineering careers and engage students with Department of the Navy science and technology. It provides students with a unique opportunity to actively participate in the scientific and engineering process and collaborate with personnel from government and industry. New interns in the program receive $5,400; returning interns receive $8,100; graduate students receive $10,800.
