643rd RSG gets back to the basics

WHITEHALL, Oh. – Soldiers in the 643rd Regional Support Group Headquarters got back to the basics during a command post exercise July 13-15, 2018, in preparation for the future missions before them.

The unit is scheduled to attend a combat support training exercise (CSTX) at Camp Ripley, Minn., next month and mobilize in 2019.

This weekend’s training is a great way to help the Soldiers, junior and officer alike, on many of the skills that they will need to succeed during mobilization, said U.S. Army Reserve Col. William Wilkerson, commander of the 643rd RSG and native of Fishers, Ind.

Soldiers in the unit were tested on basic Soldier tasks and drills including convoy operations, first aid, and reacting to enemy contact, among other skills in a near real world environment.

“This exercise showed that our Soldiers are adaptable, engaged and have the ability to thrive when pushed outside of their comfort zone,” said U.S. Army Reserve Sgt. 1st Class Mohammed Affandy, native of Bandung, Indonesia, and acting first sergeant of the exercise.

To provide accurate feedback to the Soldiers, leaders in the 643rd RSG performed after action reviews, which allowed for the most junior Soldiers a time to reflect on what was done well and what skills are still needed for additional development.

“I think the training was great,” said Private Gregory Boatwright, a radio operator and maintainer, 643rd RSG. “I look forward to more opportunities like this to work as a team and continue to build on these important Soldier skills.”

The 643rd RSG has over 2,000 Soldiers across Ohio and Indiana and provide logistical support and sustainment operations for the U.S. Army.
