MIHAIL KOGALNICEANU AIR BASE, Romania – Soldiers assigned to the Scout Platoon, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division conduct an air assault training exercise in support of Atlantic Resolve, an enduring training exercise between NATO and U.S. Forces, July 10, 2018.
The importance of air assault missions is to quickly cease and hold key terrain that is not fully secured by enemy lines. To successfully secure an area it is essential for Soldiers to get there before the enemy. Therefore, air transportation is a key element for a scout unit.
“This will be an alternate means of transportation…to get from point A to point B,” said Staff Sergeant Luis Saucedo, a sniper from 2-5 Cav, 1st ABCT, 1st CD.
Therefore, an air assault training exercise provides HHC 2-5 Cav, 1st ABCT, 1st CD Scout Platoons with a unique challenge.
“It’s significant, especially for our unit,” said 1st Lt. Trenton Turrentine, HHC, 2-5 Cav, 1st ABCT, 1st CD platoon leader. “We’re used to being mounted with three brads (Bradley’s) and five scout Humvees so this is one of our first dismounted operations.”
The training presents Soldiers an opportunity to take what they have learned from the classroom and practical exercises and apply it to a field environment.
The main focus of this exercise is to introduce a new crew and new unit to training they haven’t done prior, Saucedo said.
The training exercise allows Soldiers to assess and improve upon their skills as an individual and team. These skills include land navigation, basic hand and arm signals, establishing and occupying an observation point, cross talk communication and establishing other unit standard operating procedures.
Soldiers continue to broaden their experiences and test their skills to become more proficient in their warrior tasks.
“It’s a good first training event for our Romania rotation,” Turrentine said.
