By the Louisiana National Guard
HAMMOND, La. – The Louisiana National Guard's 204th Theater Airfield Operations Group spread a little Christmas cheer to elementary students at the Louisiana School for the Deaf in Baton Rouge, La., Dec. 18.
During Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, the school housed many Guardsmen and the 204th wanted to show its appreciation by donating and delivering more than 100 toys to the elementary boys and girls dormitories.
"It is the mission of the Louisiana National Guard to always give back to the community," said Sgt. 1st Class Devon O. John of Slidell, La., 204th TAOG readiness non-commissioned officer. "We are part of the community, we are citizen-soldiers; we are them and they are us."
"It felt really good to see the smiles on their faces while they were opening the gifts," Sgt. 1st Class Erik A. Vorhoff of Metairie, La., added.
"I think it is so lovely because we were able to help the Guard during the hurricanes and now you all giving back makes it all come full circle," said Patricia R. Mann, director of outreach services for the school.
This was the first time the 204th has donated toys to the school, but it will not be the last said John.
Words could not adequately express the joy the Soldiers felt as they watched the children rip open each package, and although the children could not verbally express their thanks and appreciation for the gifts, their hugs said it all.
