Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield held a power outage exercise on June 15 to test the installation’s crisis management system and critical infrastructure. The exercise was held to determine the installation’s capabilities and needs in the event of an actual emergency.
"Without a sustained power outage, it is impossible to assess critical infrastructure systems," said Will Ingram, chief of Operations and Maintenance Division at the garrison’s Directorate of Public Works. “Although the exercise went very well, we did identify some key areas for improvement.
During the three and a half hour outage, the team was able to check communications infrastructure, generator support at critical facilities and contingency plans. The exercise also allowed the installation to work closely with its electrical utility partner, Canoochee Electric Membership Corporation. “This exercise was a great opportunity to strengthen our relationship with the Fort Stewart team, while also having the ability for Canoochee to test the strength of our electrical distribution system. I believe that much was gained through this exercise ” said Bobby Ryon, Military Project manager for Canoochee EMC.
The installation will complete a number of improvements over the next few months as a result of the exercise. Additionally, the findings will support infrastructure investments in energy resiliency in the coming years.

The installation plans to continue to look at ways to prepare the installation for all contingencies.
