VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The deputy commander for the Joint Force Headquarters – Department of Defense Information Networks (JFHQ-DODIN) visited Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Virginia Beach to speak with staff and students, June 25.

In her opening remarks Rear Adm. Kathleen Creighton said, “It’s a pleasure to have the opportunity to talk to future leaders in our Navy.”

Creighton expanded upon her experience at JFHQ-DODIN, how DODIN encompasses all networks of every branch of the military, and the requirements to be a Joint Staff officer. She also emphasized the importance of defensive cyberspace as a prime opportunity for career growth in the Navy and for Joint assignments.

She answered students’ questions ranging from how to prepare and be successful in the information warfare community, the future of cyber warfare, information professional career path, future of the warrant officer community and expectations within the information warfare community.

On the discussion of how to prepare and be successful in the information warfare community, Creighton said, "Think about your network of people you trust, mentors or those you have served with. Be willing to serve around the globe in tough jobs. I would suggest taking the path that creates the most balance. Everyone’s path to success is different.”

Additionally, Creighton conveyed a few career “Pearls” that she has learned during her career:

    1) Career success is a team sport.
    2) Make informed career decisions and then own the consequences.
    3) Be where the decisions get made.
    4) Performance in milestone and command billets is what gets you promoted.
    5) Take care of yourself and your family.
    6) You’re a “1 percenter.

To conclude, Creighton said, "Own your decisions and accept the consequences that come with them. Take care of yourself and your family; no one will do that for you.”

In discussion with the staff, Cmdr. Andrew Boyden, commanding officer for IWTC Virginia Beach, provided Creighton an overview of the command’s mission, vision, tenets, and course curriculum.

“My personal thanks to Rear Adm. Creighton for taking the time out of her busy schedule to speak with our staff and students," said Boyden. "Exposure to her leadership and mentorship is a great opportunity for the next generation of leaders.
