Story by Staff Sgt. Eric W. Jones

    Army Reserve Medical Command

Here in the heart of Wisconsin at Fort McCoy, Army Reserve medical professionals are sustaining their skills and honing their lethality as part of Regional Medic, a training exercise linked to two other missions around the country, Red Dragon, and Nationwide Move.

Two Soldiers who arrive by ambulance are escorted into the triage area of the 865th Combat Support Hospital (CSH), an Army Reserve unit from Utica, New York, as part of medical training inject exercise during Regional Medic CSTX 86-18-04, at Tactical Training Base Justice in Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, June 22, 2018. The CSTX 86-18-04 is a Combat Support Training Exercise.

Staff Sgt. Allan Litterio and Pfc. Ariana Hagopian, Soldiers with the 865th CSH, conduct a patient evaluation on Spc. Partick Langany, also with the 865 CSH. Langany is not hurt; he has trained with the exercise managers on the symptoms he is to present to the medical professionals, bringing as much realism to the training as possible.

Langany a Lab Technician as a civilian and in the Reserves, from Syracuse, New York, stated, “This type of exercise gives me a broader scope of how the hospital works. I'm generally in the lab; being the patient lets me see how the rest of the hospital functions.”

Bringing this type of training to the tactical field environment takes time and preparation. Army Reserve Medical Command's Medical Readiness and Training Command develops and delivers relevant and realistic collective training for Joint, Multi-National, and Reserve Component Forces. Regional Medic CSTX 86-18-04 required approximately 175 personnel assigned to support MRTC, serving as Observer Coach / Trainers (OC/Ts) and support staff, for a training audience of nearly 1100 personnel in units assigned to 3rd Medical Command (Deployment Support).

Hagopian, who is participating her first annual training as an Army Reserve Soldier, commented. “I was surprised to see all the capabilities we have . . . when I walked into the Operating Room, it was just like it is in the civilian hospitals.” Hagopian is a student and a 911 dispatcher as a civilian from Susquehanna, Pennsylvania.

Having these types of large-scale training exercises allow units like the 865th CSH to bring together their command’s total capabilities, ensuring America’s Army Reserve and Soldiers are trained and ready to deploy on short-notice and bring capable, combat-ready, and lethal firepower in support of the Army and our joint partners anywhere in the world.
