    VICENZA, ITALY

    06.27.2018

    Story by Maj. Chris Bradley

    173rd Airborne Brigade

VICENZA, Italy — Sky Soldiers, family members and all members of the Vicenza Military Community are invited to Caserma Del Din on July 17, 2018 at 11 a.m. for the Running of the Herd.

The Running of the Herd is an annual 24-hour long race that allows the 173rd Airborne Brigade to pay tribute to all previous generations of fallen Sky Soldiers through a day long relay event.

“It is important to remember the fallen because to remember is to be thankful. I think the best way we can honor the sacrifice of those who have passed away is to be thankful for that sacrifice,” said Acting Brigade Chaplain Cpt. Mike Basie.

“The Running of the Herd gives us 24 hours to reflect, remember and be thankful. It also reunites us with Gold Star families and so many of our Italian friends who have been such good hosts.”

The event is open to all members of the United States Army Garrison Italy and Italian military units. To register for the Running of the Herd, American and Italian Soldiers must go online no later than July 15th to the 173rd Association Page at www.CHAPTER173.com and click on the tab for “2018 Running of the Herd.”

Team participation is encouraged and different prizes will be awarded based on the category in which a team participates. The categories are: team greatest distance achieved (light / without ruck) and team greatest distance achieved (heavy / with 35-pound ruck).

The 24 hour race begins at 11 a.m. on the 17th at the Warrior Zone just east of Del Din’s athletic field and will run until 11 a.m. on the 18th. The race will finish under the “Entering Herd Country” sign in between the parking garages. The event culminates with a closing ceremony and awards presentation near the Del Din flag poles at 2 p.m.

Participants in the Running of the Herd must have a valid Department of Defense Identification card, or be signed-on by an ID card holder to enter Del Din. Please arrive early to find parking as spaces will be limited during the day of the race.

On June 18th, the 173rd Airborne Brigade will also host a Bayonet Organizational Day beginning at 8 a.m. for all paratroopers and family members of the brigade. Bayonet Organizational Day will feature fun, competitive events between the different battalions of the brigade, tours of new facilities on Del Din like the Gunfighter Gym and the Alpha (fitness) Rig, and hands-on activities for kids of all ages hosted by the brigade’s Family Readiness Groups.

Del Din will also be home to the newest USO lounge, starting July 18th at 10 a.m. with a ribbon cutting ceremony in the 54th Brigade Engineer Battalion Day Room. Free food will be provided nearby at the Del Din Warrior Zone and souvenirs will be offered for sale.

Bayonet Organizational Day also features two races: a 5K run/walk and a 17.3 mile run for those not participating in the Running of the Herd. Both races start at 8 a.m. at the Warrior Zone. To register for the 5K or 17.3 mile race, please register on the 173rd Association Page at www.CHAPTER173.com and click on the tab for “2018 Running of the Herd.” The tab will allow participants to select which “Event” or race they would like to run.

Both the 5k and 17.3 mile races are free to enter; however, commemorative shirts are available at a small cost. Additionally, prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers for each race based on age brackets.

The Running of the Herd began during the Global War on Terrorism in Afghanistan to pay tribute to the Sky Soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. The race now honors all fallen Sky Soldiers, no matter the conflict.
