U.S. Navy Surgeon General and Chief, U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery Visits Naval Hospital Beaufort

During his admiral’s call, Faison shared his three expectations for Sailors and staff: “be worthy of the trust placed in your hands and the privilege of caring for America’s sons and daughters; be worthy of the uniform you wear; and be worthy of the privilege of leadership.”

This resonated with many of the staff members at NHB. Lt. Cdr. Ebony Ferguson, Medical Homeport clinic manager, said “Vice Adm. Faison mentioned all of our patients are in someone's phone, meaning part of someone's family and are loved, and we should remember that when we are interacting with them. I often voice this exact sentiment to my team, but his delivery was key. The way he included the audience and then to hear those around me lovingly speaking about their children, significant others or pets left an impact on me. Later that day a member of my team mentioned it changed the way he views his patients. ”

Two Sailors were honored with coins for their hard work and dedication to achieving the mission at NHB. Mr. Hassel (David) Estep was presented the Navy Civilian Radiology Technician of the Year award for 2017, and Hospitalman Patrick Moe, was promoted to Hospital Corpsman Third Class.

Following the admiral’s call and a break for lunch Faison toured the clinics at NHB and had an opportunity to interact one on one with many Sailors and staff members.

Hospitalman Ronald Baretela was excited to hear just how much the U.S. Navy is preparing for the future and the opportunities that are available to further his career. “My main takeaway would likely be the amount of effort I see being put into the future of Navy Medicine. As someone who wants to spend 20 years in the U.S. Navy, for him to come here and hear our opinions, it really helps our voices to be heard.”

And hear them he did; during his short visit Faison spoke with more than 100 Sailors and staff members, listening intently to their career goals and questions, offering advice and words of motivation.

Navy Medicine is a global health care network of 63,000 personnel that provides health care support to the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, their families and veterans in high operational tempo environments at expeditionary medical facilities, medical treatment facilities, hospitals, clinics, hospital ships and research units around the world.
