CAMP LIBERTY, Iraq – Today's Soldier in Focus is 1st Sgt. Georgino Gonzalez, who serves as the senior enlisted leader with Battery C, 2nd Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment, attached to 4th Infantry Division and Multi-National Division – Baghdad. Gonzalez and his troops have been attached to the 4th Inf. Div. since August.

A self-proclaimed Navy brat, who calls San Diego home, Gonzalez, a husband and a father of three children, reached a milestone recently in his career: He has served for more than 20 years and is now eligible for retirement. However, he said he will remain a Soldier as long as the Army will allow him.

"I can retire, and that's a good feeling to know that you can retire. However, there's still fight left in me, and I'm going to keep driving on as long as the Army will have me. They will have to throw me out kicking and screaming, really. The 20 years have been great. I love the Army."

That dedication to the Army and a strong personal outlook about being successful in the military have served Gonzalez well during his career and in his current role as the senior enlisted leader of a group of artillerymen, who serve as radar operators and technicians.

"To be successful in the Army, keep an open mind and always do the best you can in whatever job you're put in – and that's what makes a difference. You have to be able to adapt to whatever situation you're put in.

"You've go to keep that open mind and always, always – whatever it is – always do the best you can. That will speak for itself."
