As the 2018 camping season continues at Fort McCoy’s Pine View Campground, visitors have much open to them.

Open year-round, Pine View Campground is part of Pine View Recreation Area and is managed by the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. This area also includes Whitetail Ridge and Sportsman’s Range.

The campground is nestled in a wooded area about a quarter mile west of Fort McCoy’s cantonment area and is bounded by Suukjak Sep Lake on the east and the La Crosse River on the west and south.

The campground, besides having dozens of camp sites available, also has numerous cabins available for rent.

“Our cabins are in high demand,” said Joe Sagler, facility manager with DFMWR’s Business and Recreation Division. “They are booked every weekend year-round.”

Along the La Crosse River on hiking trails next to the campground, a new pedestrian bridge was built to span the river to allow for better access to all the hiking trails in the recreation area.

Suukjak Sep Lake, which is in the heart of the campground, provides opportunities for fishing, boating, and swimming or sunbathing on its sandy beach. Earlier in 2018, the lake was freshly stocked with more than 4,200 rainbow trout for anglers to try catching.

Among the other features of the campground are picnic and playground areas (one handicapped accessible), a campground with a camp store, and the Recreational Equipment Checkout Center.

“The Recreational Equipment Checkout Center really has everything,” Sagler said. “From pontoon boats to recreational vehicles to fishing equipment and even woodsplitters, the checkout has items available for every sort of activity.”

The Recreational Equipment Checkout is located at Pine View Campground in building 8053.

“Two of our biggest rental items are our pontoon boats and bass (fishing) boats,” Sagler said. “These can be checked out by authorized patrons.”

Authorized patrons for certain items, such as boats and recreational vehicles that can be taken to areas off post, are active-duty military, retired military, Department of Defense (DOD) civilian employees, Veterans Administration employees, retired DOD employees, their immediate Family members, and DOD contractors working full time at Fort McCoy.

“We do, however, offer many items for those authorized patrons as well as the general public for use at the installation,” Sagler said.

When members of the general public stay at Pine View Campground, they could rent a camper, bicycle, a game set, or even a fishing pole.

The campers, or recreational vehicle (RV) trailers, available at the checkout are: 11 29-foot campers, two 19-foot campers, three 16-foot campers, five A-line campers, and four pop-up campers.

Approximately 65,000 people make use of the campground annually, Sagler said. The campground features 160-plus campsites that are nonelectric tent sites and recreational vehicle/trailer pads with electrical hookups. Of these, 121 sites have full hookups for water, sewer, electricity, and cable TV.

The campground’s campsites are arranged in camping circles. Each site is equipped with a fire pit and a picnic table; each camping circle features a shower/restroom complex.

Pine View Campground is located near Fort McCoy off Highway 21. Follow signs to the campground.
