    Story by Sgt. Benjamin Pryer

    8th Marine Corps District

Marine Corps recruiters and future Marines with Recruiting Station Denver partnered with Keep Denver Beautiful on June 16, 2018, where they volunteered their time to pick up trash along the street of Colfax Street in Denver, Colorado.
This cleanup consisted of Marines and future Marines from Recruiting Sub-Stations Metro West and Metro North. All Marine Corps recruiting sub-stations from the local area have volunteered to clean up the section of road once a month for the next year.
The United States Marine Corps prides itself in creating model citizens willing to volunteer and give back to the community. This opportunity serves to not only propagate a love for one's home, but it provided the future Marines a chance to practice their leadership skills by taking charge of groups and directing cleaning efforts.
The recruiting sub-stations conducted this volunteering event as part of their monthly pool functions. All Marine Corps recruiting sub-stations conduct monthly pool functions, which can consist of physical training, volunteering, recreational activities, and other teambuilding ventures.
Anyone interested in participating in future cleanups can contact their local Marine Corps recruiting sub-station for more information.
A sign stating that the Marines have adopted that roadway will be posted up within the next few weeks.
This program, operated by Keep Denver Beautiful, is called Adopt a Spot. Adopt a Spot allows those who wish to adopt an area of roadway in the Denver to pick up trash and maintain the cleanliness of that roadway for a year.
According to denvergov.org, "cleanups offer participants the chance to explore details of the urban environment that often go unnoticed. Cities are part of our ecosystems and beautification projects help to solidify understanding of these complex relationships."
The website also cites expectations for anyone looking to participate in Adopt a Spot. They read that participants must: maintain a stretch of road, alleys or open areas (public right-of-way) for one year, provide manpower to pick up litter, remove illegal signs and report graffiti, agree to clean their "Spot" through the year, and notify Keep Denver Beautiful of planned cleanup dates so arrangements can be made for supplies and trash pick-ups.
