RHINE ORDNANCE BARRACKS, Germany – As multinational exercises Saber Strike 2018 and Swift Response kick off, the Theater Logistics Support Center Europe’s Deployment Processing Center is ensuring U.S. Armed Forces Europe and NATO allies have logistical support.
Roughly 700 service members and their equipment arrived at the Deployment Processing Center June 4, as a layover stop prior to entering Poland, one of the countries the exercises took place in.
“We are housing over 1,000 personnel from Italy, Israel, Spain and the German Bundeswehr, also helping to deploy over 60 pieces of equipment for these exercises,” said Steven Albanese, Deployment Processing Center Director.
In addition to housing facilities the DPC provides a six station checkpoint that offers refueling and defueling capabilities for the equipment and usage of a wash rack and maintenance bay for military vehicles that will be active during the exercises.
“The logistics support we are offering really is the difference between click and bang,” Albanese said. “You really need to have all of the logistics in place to make the end product what it needs to be.”
Chief John Ingram, mobility officer, 173rd Airborne Brigade highlighted how having logistical support from the DPC prior to entering Saber Strike, keeps his team mission ready. “Having this facility here greatly improves our ability to expedite out of theater. It enhances our speed of assembly.”
Saber Strike 2018 and Swift Response are the Army Europe’s premier training exercises for building Allied and total Army readiness. The DPC is one of the first steps that units preparing to enter the exercises will encounter.
“It is really great seeing the NATO partners and the Active duty and Reserve working together to make this mission a success. You get everyone in the same area and prepare their equipment,” said Albanese. “We have the opportunity to train like we fight and better prepare for future missions.”
