CHATTANOOGA Tenn., – Chattanooga City Councilman Erskine Oglesby read a proclamation declaring June, 11-17 Navy Week, signifying the official kick-off of Navy Week in Chattanooga, the fifth of only 14 Navy Week’s scheduled this year.
Chattanooga Navy Week, scheduled for June 11-17, 2018, runs coincident with the city’s Riverbend Festival, and is designed to give area residents an opportunity to learn about the Navy, its people and its importance to national security and prosperity.
“In 2018 the Navy will sail into Chattanooga and 13 other cities across the country that have been chosen in 2018 as part of the Navy Week outreach program,” said Oglesby. “Navy Week brings a variety of events, equipment and personnel to a single city for a series of engagements with the public and organizations, representing all sectors of the community to raise awareness of the Navy and its mission.
“On behalf of Mayor Andy Berke and Erskine Oglesby, vice chairman of the Chattanooga city council do proclaim and celebrate June 11 through 18, 2018 as Navy Week in the city of Chattanooga Tennessee,” continued Oglesby.
Navy Week Chattanooga focuses a variety of outreach assets, equipment and personnel for a week-long series of engagements with key influencers and organizations representing all sectors of the market. During this Navy Week, approximately 100 outreach events were coordinated with corporate, civic, government, education, media, veterans, and community service and diversity organizations in the city.
“Navy Week gives us an opportunity for the Nations Navy, for your Navy to come to town, especially places like Chattanooga, where you’ve got some water running by, but it’s not salt water so there’s not a lot of Navy nearby,” said Rear Adm. Paul Pearigen, commander, Navy Medicine West, and chief of the Navy Medical Corps and Memphis, Tenn. native. “We’ve got some Navy activities in the state of Tennessee, but you - unlike places along the coast where we have our fleet concentration - you don’t get to see the Navy day in and day out like some other parts of the country do.”
During this event, The Navy involved Senior Navy Leadership, Sailors assigned to the state’s namesake submarine, USS Tennessee, USS Constitution, Navy Divers and Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams, Navy Band performances, Navy Oceanography/Meteorology scientists and displays, Navy Medicine personnel and Navy History and Heritage Command historians and displays.
“On behalf of all the Sailors that are out and about in Chattanooga, on behalf of my own command and on behalf of the Chief of Naval Operations,” said Pearigen. “This is a great opportunity for us to come here and thank you for your support. Your Nations Navy is here to serve you, we’re here to serve our Nation interest, and we’re here to protect all of us and our prosperity and way of life.”
Since 2005, the Navy Week program has served as the Navy's principal outreach effort in the areas of the country without a significant naval presence. More than 212 Navy Weeks have been held in 76 different U.S. cities.
