Story by 1st Lt. Michael Marks

    2d Cavalry Regiment

Charlie Troop, Regimental Support Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment provided a three-soldier medical team to the Forward Logistics Element from May 28, 2018 – June 9, 2018.

The three-soldier medical team made up of Spc. Joseph Belsom, Spc. Elena Gutierrez and Pfc. Kierra Watson participated in the tactical road march through Czechia and Poland via their medical evacuation vehicle. This team transitioned quickly from convoy operations to medical support operations at the ammunition transfer and holding point and FLE rest overnight sites.

“The opportunity for the FLE medical team to be in one of the leading elements of this operation has been tremendous,” said Capt. Kyle Thomas, medical service corps officer serving as the RSS support operations officer during Saber Strike 18. “Medical support is a crucial aspect of any operation.”

For Belsom, Saber Strike 18 is the first mission of this caliber he has had the chance to participate in. The opportunity to increase his knowledge and skills in this environment as a junior soldier will better prepare him to become a non-commissioned officer.

“The medical team has been able to provide top of the line medical treatment to the Soldiers of 2CR,” said Thomas. “Most importantly it gives the opportunity to our junior combat medic, Spc. Belsom, the chance to lead a crew and develop skills to become a non-commissioned officer.”

Saber Strike 18 encompasses 18,000 participants from 19 allied and partner nations.

“Working with other nations hospitals is an interesting opportunity,” continued Belsom. “We got to learn from each other to better our interoperability for other missions to come.”

The Strykerized medical team attached to the FLE will continue its mission in Kazlu Ruda, Lithuania with Charlie Troop in order to continuing supporting 2CR.
