Coast Guard Research and Development Center Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Naval Postgraduate School

    NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT, UNITED STATES

    06.06.2018

    Story by Lt. Charles Clark

U.S. Coast Guard Research and Development Center

The commanding officer from the Coast Guard Research and Development Center and the president of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) signed a joint Memorandum of Understanding on May 7, 2018.

The MOU establishes a direct relationship between RDC and NPS that promotes collaboration on research and development projects of mutual benefit. Several research areas that NPS is deeply involved with across different disciplines such as 3-D printing, Arctic operations, modeling and simulation, cyber research, and satellite technology to include CubeSats are logical connection points between the two commands.

Capt. Greg Rothrock, commanding officer of the RDC, and retired Vice Adm. Ronald Route, president of NPS, both signed the document that establishes liaisons between the two commands, provides a path for thesis and research topics to be considered within the Naval Research Program and the broader NPS research portfolio, while also offering opportunities to jointly submit research proposals as Co-Investigators. This agreement includes knowledge sharing between NPS researchers and Coast Guard Subject Matter Experts, providing Coast Guard researchers with access to the world class NPS faculty.

“RDC is excited to formalize our affiliation with NPS,” Rothrock said. “This is just the start of what will be a rewarding relationship, expanding both of our organizations’ ability to research topics that benefit both the Coast Guard and Naval Postgraduate School.”

“NPS is happy to be taking better advantage of the overlapping interests with RDC, particularly in the critical areas of homeland defense and maritime domain awareness,” added NPS Dean of Research Dr. Jeffrey Paduan.
