The 1463rd Transportation Company Trains for Anything

    GRAYLING, MI, UNITED STATES

    06.06.2018

    Story by Sgt. Savannah Baldwin

    272nd Regional Support Group

The 1463rd Transportation Company out of Fort Custer, Mich. is training as one of the Mich. National Guard 4.0 units in Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center, June 2, 2018, to June 16, 2018. Army National Guard 4.0 units are aimed at increasing overall combat readiness over time through multiple organizational and cultural changes.

The overall goal of ARNG 4.0 units is to increase readiness and overall strength of National Guard units. ARNG 4.0 units are also aimed at increasing individual soldier readiness and developing more dynamic and innovative leaders. The 1463rd is conducting training and testing on several different weapon systems as well as many other soldier skills, to include radio training, combatives, and hand grenades in order to meet the standard to be an ARNG 4.0 unit.

Cpt. A.J. Malenfant, the commander of the 1463rd Transportation Company, says that the people in the unit are what makes the unit perfect for the ARNG 4.0 program.

"The hearts and the attitudes that are here are phenomenal. These guys are some of the best soldiers I've ever worked with," Malenfant says "I love leading them and mentoring and developing them".

Although being a part of an ARNG 4.0 unit means extra work, long days, and late nights the Soldiers are working hard to complete their mission. Malenfant says that being a 4.0 unit is tough, and the 1463rd has had major missions for every annual training the last three years, which has left them with little time to catch up with a lot of stuff. Malenfant says it's been demanding on the soldiers but they're holding together well.

"It's a hard request asking our soldiers to continue to deal with schedule changes, to continue to deal with extra days and long days," Malenfant says, "But overall as long as we're together we're doing great".
