BAGHDAD, Iraq – Multi-National Division – Baghdad and Iraqi army soldiers uncovered a weapon cache, Dec. 14, near Patrol Base Lion's Den in Mahmudiyah Qada.
Iraqi army soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 23rd Brigade, 17th Iraqi Army Division, discovered the weapon cache while conducting a mounted patrol at approximately 3:30 p.m. After discovering the cache, the IA reported the cache to MND-B Soldiers from Company B, 1st Battalion, 63rd Combined Arms Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division.
The following items seized included 25 82mm mortars, three 60mm mortars, two RPG-7 rockets, one RPG-7 launcher, five unknown artillery rounds, three T-72 rounds, one T-55 rounds and one U.S. Bazooka.
Soldiers from an MND-B explosive ordnance detachment conducted a controlled detonation of the cache contents.
"The Iraqi army continues to operate independently and is making great strides in securing the people of Mahmudiyah," said Lt. Col. Wayne Marotto, spokesman, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, MND-B. "The IA continues to discover and remove the extremists' means to attack the people, which make the country safer for the Iraqi people."
