    Story by Sgt. Levi Schultz

    9th Marine Corps District

CERESCO, Neb. — The Marine Corps defends the people of the United States at home and abroad. To do that, we make Marines who win our nation's battles and return as quality citizens. This commitment to returning outstanding citizens to their communities is extended to rising high school juniors and seniors every July at the Summer Leadership and Character Development Academy (SLCDA) in Quantico, Va.
Madison Parde, a Ceresco, Neb. native, heard about the program from a friend before she applied back in March, and was recently selected to join students from across the nation at the SLCDA, July 16 - 22, 2018.
"I heard all these great things about the program and thought it sounded like a great opportunity," Parde said. "When I heard we would get to visit the Holocaust museum and meet people from across the country I knew I had to apply."
According to Parde, stepping outside of her comfort zone is one of the main reasons she applied. Between maintaining a grade point average of 95.35 of 100, participating in Future Business Leaders of America, archery, and Track and Field where she competes in the hurdles and long jump, she is constantly working to better herself and those in her community.
"I just like being out there and being active," Parde said. "We've done a lot of community service and it’s helped me by learning about being a leader and preparing for the future."
Like many students who are beginning their senior year this fall, Parde is still undecided on the direction her life will take after graduation but is hoping to pursue a path that gives back to others.
"I've thought about going to college to begin a career as a veterinarian or in criminal justice," Parde said. "I've even considered serving my country in the Armed Forces."
The SLCDA focuses on developing character, leadership, ethics, morals, and values. Over the course of the week, students hear from notable leaders from around the country, including entrepreneurs, Holocaust survivors and Marine Corps leaders.
