Capt. Steve Moses, commanding officer of Naval Chaplaincy School, and Cmdr. Steven Orren, command chaplain for the Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT), visited the Presidio of Monterey, May 30 and 31.
The purpose of the visit was to assess the needs of Sailors stationed at Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Monterey. There is currently no Navy chaplain assigned to the Presidio of Monterey, so Sailors are served by the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps.
During this visit, the chaplain team met with IWTC Monterey personnel, the Commandant of the Presidio of Monterey, Col. Phillip Deppert; all base chaplains; the Marine Corps unit; and medical detachment leadership.
The visit also included a lunch with a group of student Sailors, many of whom experience high levels of stress over the course of their studies at the Defense Language Institute, one of the Navy’s most challenging accession schools.
Seaman Jodie Cha, a student studying Persian-Farsi, had lunch with the chaplains. “This motivates me to get more people involved with the chaplain services here on base.”, said Cha. Seaman Cha is IWTC Monterey’s first-ever religious lay leader. She acts as a liaison between students and the chaplains in informing students what services are available to them.
“Having served in various capacities at sea and ashore, I can attest to the power of chaplaincy services,” said Cmdr. Michael Salehi, commanding officer of IWTC Monterey. “Whether an individual is religious or not, chaplains and their staffs also provide a powerful support structure to leverage to better round a Sailor spiritually, morally, and overall well-being. As we routinely stress the academics of "A" school, it is equally important that our Sailors understand early in their careers the variety of resources at their disposal to holistically develop themselves. Our chaplains provide that rich resource, especially when Sailors are dealing with difficult situations they might otherwise encounter in their professional and personal lives.”
The decision whether or not to place a dedicated Navy chaplain at the Presidio of Monterey will be made in the coming weeks.
IWTC Monterey, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training, provides a continuum of foreign language training to Navy personnel, which prepares them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.
