Though the month of June is so close, May continues to hold fond memories for many women Veterans in the Omaha area.
Honoring women Veterans and their new babies expected in 2018, Veterans Affairs around the nation held the first Nationwide Baby Shower for Veterans in May. The VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System joined in with theirs held Sunday, May 6, with nearly 50 soon-to-be moms’ or those who had delivered their babies already in the year.
“This was such a great idea…I’m willing to be a surrogate grandpa if any of you need one,” Don Burman, director of the VA NWIHCS said. “The VA is morphing with change, and you are all a part of that change. Thanks for coming to our facilities so that we can care for you.”
As the afternoon continued, the mom’s enjoyed such entertainment as baby Bingo, a Jeopardy-like game with fun facts for raising their family and hands-on heart art projects. Of course, there was food and prizes ranging up to $100 gift cards, blankets, diapers and other donated items from persons and community organizations who supported this event.
Air Force Veteran Ceara Corden expressed her pleasure in being at the gathering. “This is a great opportunity to meet new moms, in addition to the great support network we have with each other,” Corden said. “We are all going through the same thing and we get to share advice for situations that may occur. Also, with the doctors right here, we get to know them better as well.”
