Story by Sgt. Paul Williams III

    1st Marine Corps District

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - Every summer, Marine Corps Recruiting Command invites about 200 high school students from across the nation for a week-long Summer Leadership and Character Development Academy (SLCDA) at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia.

The academy is a community outreach and social connection program developed by MCRC which revolves around three pillars: character development, leadership, and ethics. It was created to allow the students to experience ethical decision-making scenarios that simulate world events that young Marines face in daily life, garrison, or even combat.

Elkridge, Maryland, high school student Sam Levine is one of those students selected for the program. He said he has been inspired by Marines and other service members throughout his life, and appreciates the quality of life afforded to him because of them.

“For all that has been provided to me as a citizen of the United States, I believe that it is all too necessary to give back to my country and serve in the military to protect our freedoms for generations to come,” Sam said. “Since I was young, my parents instilled in me the value of giving back to those who have helped you, and it seems that the ultimate way of doing this is through serving in the armed forces, with the Marines being one such option.”

Students who apply compete for allocations and are rated based on their strong academic achievement, performance on the Initial Strength Test, active community service involvement, leadership traits and possession of strong moral and ethical standards.

“I volunteer at almost every Eagle project conducted by the scouts in my troop and I was able to successfully lead an Eagle project myself and earn the rank of Eagle Scout,” said Sam. “Beyond this, I volunteer weekly at a local Hebrew school as a teacher's aide, helping this past year to teach children the basics of Hebrew and the Jewish religion.”

“From what I had seen and heard about the program, it seemed like it was a place where I could develop as a leader and individual while spending time with like-minded individuals,” said Sam. “The skills taught at the SLCDA are ones which I am constantly working on to develop myself, and to have these taught by Marines in a military setting was an opportunity way too good to pass up.”
