    40th Public Affairs Detachment

Sgt. 1st Class Marcus D. Finley, a native of Chicago, Illinois and a telecommunication operation chief, 25W, with Signal Intelligence Support Company, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).

A telecommunication operation chief is not an entry-level military occupational specialty. A variety of schools must be completed to ensure a 25W’s leadership position. Their duties include providing technical assistance, maintaining logistical support, coordinating, configuring, maintaining, installing and operating the U.S. Army’s telecommunication networks.

“We, (telecommunication operation chiefs), help design and plan the network,” said Finley. “Meaning, we ensure that the network you’re being provided is secure and functional.”

Finley graduated high school while in Chicago in the year 1994. At 18 years-old, Finley decided to join the Army to gain his independence in one of America’s elite fighting forces.

“I joined the Army because I was 18 and knew I no longer wanted to be in the house. I understood that I was grown and needed to get out on my own. And now, Uncle Sam is where I am.”

As a 25W, non-commissioned officer, Finley enjoys helping others. Whether that is helping subordinates in everyday Soldier tasks or telecommunications and technical issues.

“I love the Army,” said Finley. “I love helping people, training people and being that NCO/leader that people can come to. In my MOS specifically, I love trouble-shooting. I enjoy when people call me because they need to find out what’s wrong with the network. I like being able to get in depth with them and explain to them how to fix the problems.”

During Finley’s free time, he enjoys playing frisbee, building his collection of jigsaw puzzles and creating animated short films. Finley is currently in college striving to obtain his master’s degree in Psychology.
