Marne area vets honor, remember fallen at Memorial Day ceremony

50th Public Affairs Detachment

FORT STEWART, Ga. – Military veterans, Family Members, and supporters gathered at the American Legion Post 168 in Hinesville, Georgia, to observe a Memorial Day ceremony, May 28.

Col. Scott O’Neal, incoming 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division commander, and leaders with the American Legion post spoke on the importance of the day and thanked those in attendance.

“Take time to think about the veterans,” said Post 168 Chaplain Adna R. Chaffee. “There is a reason why we have these gatherings. Thank you for giving us the time to think about them [fallen Soldiers] and remember them.”

The ceremony included the 3rd ID band and color guard, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and an explanation of the Honor and Remembrance Flag.

The flag serves as a visible public reminder to all Americans of the lives given to preserve freedom, and a national symbol of appreciation recognizing the sacrifice of generations of fallen hero Families said, Chaffee.

“They fought for their Families at home, some of which now have gold stars in their windows,” O’Neal said. “Let us make sure that their gold star Families are never forgotten.”

Chaffee offered special prayers and thanked the Families of the fallen for their strength and courage to move forward following the loss of their loved ones.

“Perhaps we can make every day worth the sacrifice that those Soldiers and their Families have endured and will continue to endure," O’Neal said. "Find in each day an opportunity to remember what they fought and died for."
