Djibouti, AFRICA – Service members with the 404th Civil Affairs Battalion Airborne (CA BN (A)) Functional Specialty Team (FxSP) conducted a key leader engagement and facilitated a class graduation for 33 nursing students at the Institut Superieur des Sciences de la Santé (ISSS), April 26. Two classes of first-year students received a certificate for their participation and successful completion of the second semester.
This engagement supported the ongoing English discussion groups being conducted with the first year nursing students at the ISSS. The cooperative atmosphere enabled the group to have a platform to evaluate both the facility and nursing capabilities, in addition to networking with the multiple classes of nursing students.
"The English Discussion Group's immediate impact is to develop the English speaking ability of the Djiboutian nursing students,” said Maj. Donald Dais, the environmental health officer for the 404th CA BN (A) FxSP. “Through these efforts, we are improving the relationship between our two countries."
The ISSS provides health training under the Djiboutian Ministry of Higher Education and offers numerous programs of study. Students can train to become paramedics, nurses, midwives, lab technicians, ambulance drivers, or pharmacists.
Since the students primarily speak French, lectures are presented with French translations, helping to decrease the language barrier.
“The ISSS curriculum aids Djiboutian professionals in speaking medical English,” said Capt. Jacques DuPre’, a general dentist for the 404th CA BN (A) FxSP. “Though the language barrier has been a challenge, [communication] has improved over time as students have improved in their English.”
This is the second semester that the FxSP has worked with these nursing students. Each semester the (FxSP) are given five weeks to work with the students before the students go on a 10-week break from school. In September the group will begin the third semester of training with these current students.
This type of cooperative learning encourages the ongoing partnership between the United States and Djibouti, in addition to building a future of increased medical care for Djiboutians.
