    Story by Sgt. Leo Jenkins

FORT STEWART, Ga. - The tank commander of the Army’s best tank crew attributes his success at this year’s best tank competition to teamwork.

Staff Sgt. Johnathan Werner, a native of Texas, assigned to 3rd Combined Arms Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division lead his crew to win the 2018 Sullivan Cup, April 4, at Fort Benning, Georgia.

The 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team recently became the Army’s newest armored brigade. Just in time for the Sullivan Cup, the Spartan fielded their best tank crew and won.

“Everything is still surreal. We won the Sullivan Cup, ya’ know?” Werner said. “Having people recognize me for one of my proudest moments in the military so far. I'm incredibly proud of my team's achievement.”
Werner’s team include Cpl. Justin Harris, Pvt Brandon Zacher, and Pvt. Dekken Sanders. They met and started training only a few weeks before the competition.

“The hardest thing about our training was being a new team. We barely knew each other, and had to function as one crew,” said Werner. “Trusting my team to be confident and understand their individual duty position takes time and dedication.”
At home, Werner has another, arguably more important team, in his life, wife Stephanie and three-year-old daughter Talia

“I would like to give a special thanks to my wife, Stephanie. Taking care of Talia and I isn’t easy, and I can't thank her enough. She loves what I do, supports my career, and I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
Something to anticipate for this coming year.

“I'm going to Master Gunner School. I’m looking forward to bringing that knowledge back to my soldiers.” Werner said.

“We are staying a team, and we have our eyes on the Worthington Cup in Canada.”
