The summer months are fast approaching and members of the Fort Polk community are most likely thinking about what to do and where to go while the youngsters are out of school.
If the beach is your “thing,” along with great seafood and a boardwalk full of fun rides, a trip to Galveston Island could be in your future.
Located just south of Houston on Interstate 45, Galveston Island is a beach combers paradise, while at the same time offers all of the amenities expected at a resort. And for Fort Polk residents, the trip only takes about 3 hours, making it the perfect distance for a day trip.
However, if you would like to spend more than a day, there are a plethora of opportunities for Family fun, from Moody Gardens and the nearby air museum, to historical downtown with its quaint shops and fine dining.
But most of all, Galveston is known for its white sandy beaches, abundance of shells and the chance to catch a glimpse of playing dolphins frolicking in the bay.
So make plans to visit Galveston while stationed at Fort Polk. The trip is easy: U.S. Hwy 171 to I-10 West and follow the signs. There are two ways you can go — via highway or exit at Winnie and take the ferry (always fun for the youngsters) across the bay. Either way, you’re sure to enjoy the trip.
