The ceremony honored the sacrifices made by more than 1.3 million American service men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

“These heroes came from every corner of America, and every walk of life,” said Chief Warrant Officer 5 Daniel Sysol, the command chief warrant officer for the 99th Readiness Division. “…each different, each an individual who made a choice to carry the light of Liberty’s torch to millions across the globe.”

While commenting on those who are currently serving, Sysol also asked the crowd to remember America’s fallen Warriors and consider the debt owed to those who gave their life.

“Their silent service to this great nation must not go unnoticed,” he said. “I ask again that we not simply remember the brave Americans who gave their lives for us, but that we honor them—not just today, but every day.”

This remembrance ceremony is a reverent celebration for the freedom enjoyed by Americans. Sysol urged the crowd to remember the character, strength, courage and moral fortitude of those who are serving and have served in uniform, as those things are what Memorial Day is truly about.

“Right now, tens of thousands of service members are forward deployed around the world, upholding the legacy of past Warriors who lives were dedicated to preserving a life of freedom for their families, friends and communities,” said Sysol.

Although this is an annual event for the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, the ceremony this year almost did not happen.

“Our dining facility is under construction and we were almost forced to cancel the ceremony this year,” said Ofc. Miles Noonan, a law enforcement officer with the Federal Reserve Police. “We were able to utilize a different space and look forward to next year’s ceremony.”

The remembrance ceremony at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia is held the Thursday before Memorial Day every year.
