Veterans young and old share a special bond that reflects the time-honored military tradition of service.
As part of the Torrance Armed Forces Day Activities, the 300th Army Band performed a medley of patriotic music to honor these heroes. The concert took the audience on a musical journey highlighting how the military influenced American composers during their time. The goal is to present a musical experience that leaves the audience with a sense of patriotism, gratitude, and a reminder of the sacrifices made each day.
Staff Sgt. Briana Foster, the narrator and vocalist with the 300th Army Band, expressed the wide ran4ge of emotions communicated through the power of music.
"When I sing an emotional song, I look forward to connecting with people in the audience," said Foster. Experiencing what the audience feels is another way the bandsmen connect with the public.
No military concert would be complete without playing the "Armed Forces Salute," a musical arrangement that highlights the themes from each branch of service. During the piece, it is customary for the conductor to turn and salute the veterans in attendance.
"It's a humbling experience for me to turn around, and see who have served. My favorite part is getting to honor and salute them for their service," Chief Warrent Officer 2 Jeff Smith, 300th Army Band conductor.
The 300th Army Band also participates in the TAFDA Parade, performing various military marches along Torrance Blvd.
"It's a unique opportunity to celebrate with the community that enjoys giving back to the armed services," said Foster.
The 300th Army Band has also served and bridged the cultural gap with U.S. allies abroad.
