The Navy’s military working dogs and pets of service members that are seen at Naval Base Kitsap Bangor Veterinary Clinic might not know the difference, but their owners surely will.

The clinic held a symbolic ribbon-cutting on May 21, 2018 signaling the completion of a renovation project started in September, 2016, that included a thorough exterior and interior remodeling effort of the structure.

“The renovation is a great opportunity for us to continue to offer a high standard of care that all our clients expect and deserve. We have high expectations to do just that,” said U.S. Army Capt. Jennelle Uyemum-Reyes, clinic officer in charge and veterinarian.

The clinic is staffed by Army Veterinarian and support staff that primarily provide veterinarian services to the Navy military working dogs, as well as privately owned animals of Department of Defense personnel. The staff also handles galley and commissary food inspections.

“This project is just another example of Navy Medicine and Army Medicine working towards a common goal for the benefit of others,” stated Cmdr. Robert McMahon, NHB Director of Administration, FACHE.

There are now three dedicated exam rooms able to handle all varied sizes of canines, along with a dedicated pharmacy area, laboratory, isolation space and waiting room.

Wellness appointments, vaccines, health certificates, dentals, small procedures, as well as sick call appointments are available at the clinic.

Uyemum-Reyes acknowledges that the renovation ribbon cutting has also provided them the perfect time to remind those transferring on permanent change of station (PCs) orders to a locale with strict pet quarantine rules to start planning for their pet now.

“As soon as someone knows where they’re going, even if it’s a year out, come to us so we can map out a plan of what needs to be done beforehand. As soon as you get those orders don’t wait to see us,” Uyemum-Reyes said.

The clinic is located at 1004 Tautog Circle on Naval Base Kitsap Bangor, with veterinary services available Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Appointments can be made by calling 360-396-7900.

Along with NHB’s Facilities Management department, the renovation team also included Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) construction management team of Beth McNair, construction manager, Andy McCormick, engineering technician, and Lt. Cmdr. Terrence White, facilities engineering acquisition division director, and contractor RORE.

“The building was badly deteriorated and was in need of major overhaul. It was originally built in 1944 as a security building and was renovated and doubled in size in 1968. In 2006 in was minimally renovated again into what is now the Veterinary Services,” explained Scott Hanneman, Naval Hospital Bremerton project manager.
