CAMP BUEHRING, Kuwait — The 770th Engineer Company, a United States Army Reserve unit based out of Penn Yan, N.Y., has been working hard to improve infrastructure and living conditions for service members serving in the Middle East in support of Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR). While deployed, the 770th is part of the 35th Theater Engineer Brigade, Task Force Spartan, which conducts multiple building and improvement projects throughout the region.
Arriving in the theater at the beginning of September, the 770th hit the ground running. The Soldiers have completed more than 60 major construction projects totaling more than 77,000 hours of labor. They have worked alongside units from across the Army and worked in support of Special Operations Joint Task Force.
Hitting ground in September, the 770th got right to work. Under the leadership of Sgt. William Clegg of Bridgeport, Ohio, their primary mission was to increase the livability of their base camp. The team of 11 Soldiers completed construction of six miles of roadways, a weapons firing range, and a 25,000-square-foot motor pool. Clegg and his team completed over 15 base construction projects, improving the lives of all service members.
While Clegg and his team worked improving their site, 1st Lt. Patrick Hughes of Fairpoint, N.Y, and his team of 26 Soldiers were moving into an empty field that would become their home. Over the past several months, the small team has constructed basic life support facilities, as well as constructing perimeter security. Over the first few months, Hughes and his team completed multiple projects to improve the quality of Soldiers’ lives while at the camp. They have built over 10 miles of roads, a 200,000-square-foot motor pool, and a fuel supply point.
Once the initial life support was in place, Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, and Marines from across the Special Operations Joint Task Force began moving in to begin conducting operations in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. With basic life support taken care of, the 770th received a new mission, to improve a small landing strip. Over the last few months, the 770th has worked to build a safer landing strip, parking apron, and an improved drainage system in order to keep the landing strip up and running.
“Our teams have built guard towers, new roads, soccer fields, firing ranges and motor pools, as well as many other projects that have helped improve base security as well as grow relationships with the local population,” Hughes stated.
Looking forward, Hughes says the 770th plans to stay busy with more construction projects through the remainder of their deployment, while planning future missions for their follow-on unit.
