For Soldiers at U.S. Army Central, working at a three-star command can be challenging and you have to find a way to remain resilient. One Soldier has found a way to combine something he loves to do with a charitable way to give back to the community.
Spc. Ronnie Brown, an Information Management Specialist with the Secretary General Staff (SGS) of USARCENT, spends his duty days maintaining computer systems and fixing network connectivity problems, but in his spare time he uses his passion for motorcycle riding as a stress relief for not only himself, but for others as well.
“I know he does a lot of charity rides for nursing homes and special needs children’s events,” said Sgt. 1st Class Jonathan James, the NCOIC for the Secretary General Staff section. “Brown is a good Soldier, he knows his job and is well trained, and he also mentors and teaches other Soldiers.” James continued.
USARCENT has a motorcycle mentorship program that teaches riders about safety and how to become better, more responsible operators on the road by taking the participants on a ride to assess their skill level. “The ride was pretty good and smooth. We went to Florence, S.C., to a (motorcycle) dealership, and after that we went out to eat and then rode back,” Brown said. “We were given a safety brief before we left, stating the equipment that we should be wearing and the proper riding techniques and how to maintain stable positions. I got a lot out of it.” The instruction also broke down all the riding techniques and safety courses that are available for motorcyclists. When asked how he compares motorcycle riding techniques to his job Brown said, “You have to take it nice and easy so that you don't break anything. I'll get on my motorcycle and ride out a little bit just to calm down and it works out a lot of kinks in life."
For newcomers to motorcycle riding Brown offered this advice, "Start off at your own pace, just ride your own ride."
U.S. Army motorcycle riders and passengers must adhere to the regulations of the Army Safety Program.
