ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam — Reserve Citizen Airmen assigned to the 44th Aerial Port Squadron here introduced military families and children to what it’s like to be an Airmen during Operation Inafa’ Maolek at Andersen Air Force Base, May 5.
Families were able to participate during a playful version of military activities that included readiness, an equipment demonstration, fitness preparation and interaction with unit members.
"Involving our children helps with overall resiliency as a force,” said Chief Master Sgt. Timothy White, 4th Air Force command chief. "It’s important to take care of our Airmen and their families."
Having family involvement helped build a wider understanding of mission requirements and promoted individual connection with the unit.
"My daughter had a great time and it was fun sharing this experience with her," said Staff Sgt. Bedrick Briones, a 44th APS air transportation specialist. "It was the first time she’s seen what I do in the military. She really liked the vehicle demonstration."
Part of leaderships goals for the 624th Regional Support Group, which includes the 44th APS, encompasses strengthening families and improve resiliency.
“Involving our kids helps them understand what we go through and experience,” said Maj. Glenn Camacho, 44th APS commander. “It’s really important that they know what mom and dad do to support the mission.”
The event added a local touch by using the Chamorro term “Inafa' Maolek” meaning ‘to make’ (inafa’) ‘good’ (maolek). It describes the concept of restoring harmony or order.
“The event held true to its name by bringing families together,” said Col. Kenneth Lute, 624th Regional Support Group commander. “I’d like to see all of our Air Force Reserve units in Guam and Hawaii incorporate this type of activity for our families. It really helps families build a connection first-hand with what our Airmen do.”
The 624th RSG is the largest Air Force Reserve presence in the Pacific. The Group has units located at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, and Andersen Air Force Base. The Group provides nearly 700 combat-ready Airmen who specialize in aerial port, aeromedical support and civil engineering operations for worldwide employment, promoting peace and stability in the Asia Pacific.
