Colon Cancer? Meet a true Warrior!

ARLINGTON, Va. - This is not the face of defeat, it’s not the face of fear. This is the face of defiance on Army Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Foiles who will not let cancer beat him. The Eugene Oregon Acquisition, Logistics, and Technology Non-commissioned Officer learned on January 11, 2017 that he had stage three colon cancer. His assignment in Italy made the treatment a bit difficult as he had to travel to Germany for the process.
You cannot imagine the feeling Foiles had when he received the news of his cancer diagnosis. A survivor of two combat tours to Iraq and having suffered knee, neck and back injuries made him want to press forward to do his duty and not allow the big “C” to take over.
“I was 44 and you have to know your body. If something’s not right, get checked because it could save your life, said Foiles.” Foiles tenacity would not allow Cancer to take over his world. Onward to Joint Base Lewis McChord Warrior Transition Battalion where he arrived in time to learn about Army Pacific Regional Trials where he explored adaptive sports and the recovery process. It was a whole new world for him.
“If you have the opportunity go to the WTB, take it, and take it seriously. In the long run, you have to do what’s right for yourself, he added. Foiles was encouraged to go to the Regional Trials where he competed in field, archery, shooting, powerlifting and volleyball. He scored well enough to be selected to compete in the 2018 Army Trials at Fort Bliss, Texas. Upon completion of the trails, he was selected as a member of Team Army to compete in the 2018 Department of Defense Warrior Games, June 1-9 at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
“It’s exciting, one of those memories you can look back on and say I did this,” said Foiles.
He looks forward to representing Team Army but beyond that, he wants to get healthy again, retire next spring and possibly start a business in the Philippines, the home of his wife. You never know the path that is put in front of you but Foiles has one piece of solid advice.
“If you’re going to do something, put everything into it. You get out of it what you put into it.”
