FORT CARSON, Colo. – The Combat Aviation Brigade hosted an officer professional development training at Forest Resiliency Center to foster resiliency across the brigade and identify available resources.

The training focused on issues affecting not only Soldiers, but family members and Department of the Army civilians, said Rory Travis, Fort Carson performance center manager and a lead speaker at the event.

“Resiliency is a total Army perspective,” Travis said.

Company commanders from across the brigade were in attendance, taking the opportunity to learn about their strengths and weaknesses, and to identify issues and reasonable ways solve them.

“You can know what you want to do and how you want to accomplish it, but if you can’t regulate yourself or your unit energy level you will fail,” said Capt. David Ball, commander, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Assault Helicopter Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment, 4th CAB.

The event began with a briefing from Travis on Army resiliency.

Resiliency is about targeting specifics skills that Soldiers can leverage and benefit from at different levels in their careers, Travis said.

The officers participated in a number of team-building exercises to gain an understanding of their unique capabilities. They were divided into groups of five, and each group had to complete a set of tasks that tested their problem-solving, communication and critical thinking skills on an individual and collective level.

Following the group exercises, the participants were challenged to come up with ways to improve their companies.

They tackled issues such as confirmation bias, financial management, internal communication and a growth mindset.

Everyone who attended the training gained tools to be a better company commander, Ball said.

“The biggest takeaway is that there are a lot resources here on post, and a lot of our Soldiers and family members are not aware that these resources are available to them,” he said.
