BASTOGNE: 1-32nd CAV takes home WOE flag football trophy

    FORT CAMPBELL, KENTUCKY, UNITED STATES

    05.02.2018

    Story by Sgt. SHARIFA NEWTON

    40th Public Affairs Detachment

The 1st Squadron, 32nd Cavalry Regiment “Victory or Death,” 1st Brigade Combat Team went head-to-head with the 526th Brigade Support Battalion “Performance,” 2nd Brigade Combat Team, for the first place trophy in the 2017 Week of the Eagles Flag Football Championship, May 24, and came away with a 14-6 victory. With five games in two days, the 1-32nd CAV had their work cut out for them.

“It was a great challenge for us,” said Staff Sgt. Daniel Fortune, a Cavalry scout platoon sergeant assigned to the 1-32nd CAV.

The other teams were very good, so the games were very competitive, Fortune said.

Fortune, the 1-32nd CAV triple threat served as the coach, an outside linebacker and an offensive player. Fortune said the players’ astuteness and discipline made his coaching experience smooth.

But astuteness and discipline is not all the 1-32nd CAV can attribute their final victory to; throughout the game the team had a couple of great plays and few penalties despite unsavory weather conditions.

“We liked playing in the rain,” said Staff Sgt. Sean O’Hara, a cavalry scout section sergeant assigned to the 1-32nd CAV, and the team’s wide receiver and cornerback. “Being ‘CAV’, we’re always out in the weather, so we thought that gave us an advantage over the BSB guys. We were pretty happy it was raining. It gave us a little bit more motivation.”

The 1-32nd CAV was recently appointed a new squadron commander, so the players were grateful for the opportunity to showcase their skills. O’Hara and Fortune agreed that they and their teammates were proud to show their commander the winning spirit of 1st BCT and 1-32nd CAV.

Having recently returned to the unit following a two-year stint as an air assault instructor, O’Hara said “It’s good to come back to first place.”
