U.S. Fleet Forces Host 2018 Executive Leadership Symposium

NORFOLK (NNS) – U.S. Fleet Forces Command (USFF) hosted the 2018 Senior Enlisted Leaders Executive Leadership Symposium (SEL ELS) at the USFF headquarters building onboard Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads in Norfolk, Virginia, April 23-26.

USFF Fleet Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Training Team partnered with Fleet Master Chief Paul Kingsbury to host 17 senior enlisted leaders for a 3-day seminar designed to introduce unit-level command master chiefs to the knowledge, skills, and perspectives needed to succeed as a SEL working on a flag or general officer staff.

The course aims to build upon their prior education and experience and provide a greater understanding and appreciation of how commanders and their staffs lead and manage at operational and strategic levels to execute the Navy's mission.

"This symposium serves as a great opportunity to interact with leaders from all warfare communities and discuss their perspective on how senior enlisted leaders support the warfighter," said Force Master Chief Petty Officer Cole Karim, a class mentor for the symposium and assigned to Naval Education and Training Command. “Communication is key to effective leadership and these meetings allow that communication to happen.”

Leaders stated that the overall goal of the seminar was to provide a platform for the group to have a serious conversation about the deckplate-level implementation of Navy programs, such as Ready Relevant Learning and Sailor 2025 initiatives. The participants also held an open discussion on how Navy objectives are being met, how to better support programs and how policies are affecting their Sailors across fleet.

"Overall, the huddle provided profound engagement and enlightening information from all of the presenters. The material was presented at an executive level and there were no boundaries to the question and answer portion of the symposium,” said Command Master Chief Phillips Heuban, assigned to USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77). “It was worthwhile to hear first-hand the expectations and experiences from flag officers, and multi-national and joint service command senior executive leaders. The open and direct dialogue between students and facilitators greatly cemented the course objectives."

The Fleet CPO Training Team plans to keep the conversation going throughout the year with more roundtable discussions and trainings.
The Fleet CPO Training Team provides training to enhance CPO responsibilities, key Navy programs, and team building and leader development.

USFF's mission includes training, certifying and providing combat-ready Navy forces to combatant commanders in support of prompt, sustained naval, joint, and combined operations in support of U.S. national interests. USFF is responsible for command and control of subordinate Navy forces and shore activities during the planning and execution stages of assigned service functions in support of the Chief of Naval Operations.
