The Onslow County Farmers’ Market and several independent local vendors brought local produce and handmade goods to the base for service members and their families to purchase beside the Harriotte B. Smith Library April 19.
The farmers’ market will be near the parking lot on the side of the library every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until the end of August.
“We kind of requested to have this location,” said Marie Bowman, Onslow County Farmers’ Market manager. “We thought it was more family friendly. (Families) could check in for reading time in the mornings. With the pavilion, they can grab lunch and have a shaded area to enjoy a little family time in the middle of the day.”
Purchasing goods from local businesses keeps a majority of the dollars spent within the community strengthening the community’s economic base, as well as generally contributing less to congestion, habitat loss and pollution.
“For every dollar that you spend with a local business, it’s estimated that 68 cents of it stays in that local community,” said Bowman. “All of the folks here own businesses in Onslow County so that money stays here.”
The purpose of bringing the market to MCB Camp Lejeune is so all personnel with authorized base access have the opportunity to shop within the base community and have direct access to the local goods.
“We’re just giving the base community access to the fresh local produce,” said Marie Bowman, Onslow County Farmer’s Market manager.
Not only does the market benefit the local economy, but it also benefits relationships within the community.
“(I would) absolutely encourage people to come out to the farmers market,” said CWO John Hassel, Truck Company, Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marine Division. “It’s something different (where you are) able to get out and meet new people.”
Whether you are looking for goods or produce, the farmers’ market has something for everyone.
“The folks have been very friendly and I think it’s a good time,” said Hassel. “I’d like to see more folks out here. It’s kind of like a flea market mixed with a farmers’ market and everything is handmade or hand grown.”
