NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) – Chief Cryptologic Technician (Networks) Bernard Armer assigned to Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command (NCDOC) received the Department of the Navy (DON) Cyberspace/Information Technology Person of the Year at the DON IT East Conference, April 24.

The award is presented annually at the DON IT East and the DON IT West conferences as part of the DON IT Excellence awards. These awards seek to recognize individuals and teams whose work in information technology has had a transformative impact on the Navy and Marine Corps.

"We received 58 awards nominations this year," said Jim Knox, DON CIO Director of Information and Warfare Management. "Ten winners were selected."

Armer, who is part of NCDOC’s defensive cyber operations afloat team, was selected for his efforts while deployed with Carrier Strike Group One (CSG-1) and his ashore role as the defensive cyber operations afloat team chief. He routinely manages six deployable afloat teams and a 24/7 deployment support watch. While deployed with CSG-1, he led 51 Sailors across seven ships in the detection of software vulnerabilities and the mitigation of computer network incidents.

Upon hearing of his selection, he used the opportunity to shed light on the excellent performance by the Sailors who worked with him.

“I was fortunate to lead and facilitate the great work that was accomplished within the combined CSG-1 defensive cyber operations team and entire NCDOC reach-back support team,” said Armer. “Our team goals would not have been accomplished if not for the exceptional leadership, vision, and commitment from CTN1 Kearney, CTN2 Mason, and CTN3 Fadgen.”

Armer was presented with the award at the DON IT East Keynote Luncheon alongside seven other individuals and teams. His was one of only five individual awards to be granted this year.

Looking forward, Armer says he wants to continue pushing the boundaries of shipboard cyber defense and to help bring increased awareness of defensive cyber capabilities to the Surface Warfare community.

“My goal is to ensure future Afloat defensive cyber teams are set up for success and understand lessons learned,” he said. “Defensive cyber operations at the Strike Group level is a team sport and takes ‘buy in’ from all levels of leadership in addition to local unit teams. Afloat defensive cyber operations teams deliver critical situational awareness capabilities and defensive cyber strategy to Warfare Commanders and give Information Warfare Commanders an unprecedented ability to integrate defensive cyber into strike group operations.”

NCDOC’s mission is to execute defensive cyberspace operations and enable global power projection through proactive network defense and reports operationally to U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet. Since its establishment, FCC/C10F has grown into an operational force composed of more than 16,000 Active and Reserve Sailors and civilians organized into 27 active commands, 40 Cyber Mission Force units, and 29 reserve commands around the globe. FCC serves as the Navy component command to U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Cyber Command, and the Navy's Service Cryptologic Component commander under the National Security Agency/Central Security Service. C10F, the operational arm of FCC, executes its mission through a task force structure similar to other warfare commanders. In this role, C10F provides support of Navy and joint missions in cyber/networks, cryptologic/signals intelligence and space.
