The Fort Bliss Spouses Association awarded $40,000 in scholarships to seven high school students and two college students at the Magoffin House Courtyard in El Paso, Texas on April 25.

The 2018 Merit-Scholarship Awards Dinner was for the FBSA members and dependent children.

“The club gives so much back to the community, whether it is grants and welfare into the city or scholarships to spouses and dependent children,” said Carla Miller, Scholarship Chair Committee Liaison for the FBSA.

Miller did the marketing for the event, submitted and rewrote the scholarship grant, and worked with a team of judges to have all student applications reviewed.

“The proceeds mainly come from fundraisers and thrift shops, which in turn go back into the community which I think shows how much we really do care as an organization,” said Miller.

Community outreach is the main purpose for organizations such as the FBSA.

“I really enjoy being able to provide for not only Fort Bliss, but the surrounding El Paso communities,” said Ashley Jordan, Vice President for FBSA.

Jordan has been a member of the organization for two years now and has partaken in events like creating gift baskets for expecting mothers and volunteering at local shelters to help the homeless.

Dating back to the late nineteenth century, the organization was first known as the Woman’s Club of El Paso. Their purpose remains to improve conditions and opportunities for the community.

The FBSA collectively agreed that this particular event would solely be all about the students receiving their scholarships.

One of the scholarship recipients is 17-year-old Noah Van Atta, a Coronado High School student from El Paso.

“My mother is a member of the FBSA and she showed me the importance of not only the organization itself, but the importance of giving back.”

When the military members are serving, these types of organizations are great opportunities for the spouses to get together and support one another, Van Atta said.
“I’m grateful that the organization is willing to partake in my education,“ said Van Atta. “I think it’s great that they’re doing community outreach and creating opportunities for young kids like myself to further my growth throughout my education.”
