Leadership from the West Virginia Army National Guard and the Ridge Runner program engaged in a meeting April 24, 2018 with leadership from the Michigan National Guard and Latvia’s Zemmersardze (National Guard) at Camp Dawson, West Virginia.

Latvian Brig. Gen. Ainars Ozolins, the Zemmersardze Commander, and fellow leadership made the trip from the Northern European Baltic country to discuss the WVNG providing assistance to the Michigan National Guard’s State Partnership Program.

“I will never pass the chance to extend the WVNG’s resources, wether it be training facilities, knowledge or manpower, to help further ties globally and nationally,” said Maj. Gen. James Hoyer, the West Virginia Adjutant General. “If we can get people in this state, it only adds to our growth and furthers the knowledge of Soldiers and Airmen. Of course, the economic impact of non-residents coming in for training trickles down to impact the community.”

Hoyer presented the Zemmersardze and MING members a brief history lesson followed by an extensive overview of the WVNG, showcasing the capabilities and missions of both the Army and Air Guard. Ozolins offered a similar presentation on the Zemmersardze and focused on the gaps they need filled to become a competent force. He explained that their biggest missing piece of the puzzle is in-depth special forces training.

Command Sgt. Maj. Jeff Wales, WVNG Ridge Runner Program Manager, along with WVNG leadership, explained the process of the vigorous special forces training program and its adaptability to change and be manipulated to each participating unit’s needs.

The exchanging of ideas between all three parties created a very productive day. With the hopes of bringing two more clients, the Zessersardze and MING, into not only the Ridge Runner Program but other programs that the WVNG has developed, is closer to becoming set in stone.
