CORONADO, Calif.— On April 21, Aerographer's Mate 1st Class (AG1) Charles Anthony Barzon received the Captain Harry T. Jenkins Memorial Award during the Coronado Chamber of Commerce's 33rd annual "Salute to the Military Ball" at the Hotel Del Coronado in Coronado, Calif.

In honor of one of Coronado’s most revered residents, the late Captain Harry T. Jenkins, a Naval Aviator and seven-year Vietnam Prisoner of War, the award recognizes an active duty service member who exemplifies the same leadership and character exhibited by its namesake.

“The guiding principles of Captain Harry T. Jenkins are built within the DNA of Petty Officer Barzon, as evidenced by the positive impact he leads in every interaction with the community and the command,” said Fleet Weather Center-San Diego’s Commanding Officer Capt. Michael Roth.

A New Orleans native, AG1 Barzon is currently assigned to Fleet Weather Center-San Diego and serves as an aviation weather forecast duty officer. He is responsible for providing weather support to ensure the resource protection and safety of seven naval airfields including Naval Air Station North Island, El Centro, Fallon, Lemoore, Point Mugu, Whidbey Island, China Lake and sensitive fleet concentration areas throughout Naval Region Southwest and Naval Region Northwest.

A leader who is dedicated to his profession and the community, AG1 Barzon also serves as Command Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) coordinator, Diversity Committee president, Division Training petty officer and command choir leader.

Translating his love of music into community service, he acts as choir director and pianist during holiday and regular services for the Japanese Christian Church of San Diego, Resounding Joy Inc., and Naval Base Coronado Chapels. AG1 Barzon is an active member of the San Diego Navy Navigators Ministry and the community music instructor with the California Association of Professional Music Teachers. He shared his talents at the Arc of San Diego, De Portola Middle School and at Wounded Warriors Music Therapy.

“Petty Officer Barzon’s service to others is a part of his daily life and his world philosophy,” said Capt. Roth. “He believes that helping others is an essential part of the human condition as he continues to give hours of his free time to better the lives of those around him.”

Fleet Weather Center San Diego, situated at Naval Air Station North Island, consists of 316 military and civilian personnel who provide full-spectrum weather services to facilitate risk management, resource protection and decision superiority to enable mission success.

Naval Oceanography directs and oversees more than 2,500 globally-distributed military and civilian personnel who collect, process and exploit environmental information to assist Fleet and Joint Commanders in all warfare areas to make better decisions faster than the adversary.
