WARREN, Michigan – Sabine McCorry has spent her career helping others, both on and off the field of Warfighter support.

In July 2017, senior leaders at the Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime’s detachment in Warren, Michigan, developed an award to recognize their workforce for outstanding performance above and beyond expectations. The On-the-Ball Award is unique because it allows peers to nominate their coworkers and recognize them for their efforts.

The award consists of a real baseball and mitt enclosed in a display box.
Once nominated by their peers, the candidates are selected by DLA Land Warren leaders and presented the award in front of their colleagues. The awardee then autographs the encased baseball and has the honor of displaying the award on his or her desk for five months until the next recipient receives the award.

McCorry, a contract specialist on DLA Land Warren’s Artillery and Track Team, is the second and most recent recipient of the detachment award. She received the award during an April 5 recognition ceremony.

Remarks from her nomination state McCorry regularly went above and beyond her basic responsibilities when she trained new buyers on her team. She repeatedly sacrificed her own time developing others while maintaining a large workload of her own.

One coworker said of McCorry, “Instead of just saying she doesn’t know something, she’ll research anything that’s in question until the correct answer is discovered. She provides nothing but constructive critiques with kindness and patience.”

“The mission to support the warfighter drives me to work hard,” McCorry said. “I try to emphasize the importance of being positive, staying on task, and taking responsibility and ownership in order to achieve the best possible outcome for our customers.”

DLA Warren’s Director, Vito Zuccaro, said that as a trainer there is an expectation to equip an employee with all of the necessary skills required to adequately and successfully perform the job.

“Once in a while you encounter a great trainer that goes above and beyond their responsibilities to assist and educate others – and McCorry has exuded that,” he said.

Prior to entering the contracting career field in 2014, McCorry was a medical technologist for 14 years and a technical specialist and contracting officer representative for two years. While her husband was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas, she worked in a physician’s office at the Troop Medical Center and Army Community Hospital.

She and her husband William moved to Michigan in 2005, where McCorry worked at the Veterans Affairs Ann Arbor Healthcare System and VA contracting office.

McCorry has been with DLA Land Warren for 19 months and said she is “very glad and fortunate to be a part of this organization.”

She comes from a military family. Her father-in-law retired from the Air Force and her husband is an Army combat veteran. The McCorrys just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

They have a 23-year old daughter, Dedra, who shares her mother’s dedication for supporting service members and veterans. Throughout high school and college their daughter regularly volunteered at and now works for the VA as a medical support assistant. Their son William, 14, plans on a future career in military service.

In her spare time, McCorry said she enjoys traveling and spending time with her family.
