The North Carolina National Guard’s Field Maintenance Shop (FMS) 1 in Asheville, North Carolina recently earned a 2017 Secretary of the Army Environmental Award for Sustainability and placed second in the 2018 Secretary of Defense Environmental Awards in the category Sustainability, Industrial Installation.

The awards are given for “regulatory compliance and exceeding sustainability and pollution prevention through internal management practices,” said 1st Sgt. Todd Lingerfelt, the FMS #1 supervisor.

“We submit a packet every couple of years to showcase our efforts in pollution prevention and sustainability,” he said. “We like to compete with other facilities throughout the DoD and then compare processes in hopes of improving our program.”

In addition to replacing outdated lighting fixtures with LED lights, the shop also takes measures to ensure hazardous and waste materials are handled properly.

“We strive to meet and exceed regulatory guidance in our daily operations,” Lingerfelt said. “This being said, our efforts must be part of the operational battle rhythm to meet regulatory expectations. We track our environmental management using the system integrated within our organization. To meet these guidelines, we must be ever vigilant to ensure we comply.”

FMS 1 submits a packet every year to be considered for the awards as a way to stay competitive and compare processes with other organizations in hopes of improving their program.

“Truly, any accolades we receive are shared throughout the organization as we strive to exceed regulatory expectations,” Lingerfelt said. “The recognition is acknowledged as a "job well done" and this pursuit is engrained in each of us as we strive for excellence. We are pleased that our efforts can be recognized and hope to share our management philosophies to enhance the organization as a whole.”
