EVERETT Wash. - Naval Station Everett (NSE) Sailors and Department of the Navy civilian employees took part in various events supporting environmental protection, in the spirit of Earth Day, April 18 and 19.
Sailors and civilian employees teamed up with EarthCorps, a Seattle-based non-profit organization, volunteering on the Union Slough restoration project, April 18. Union Slough is a 24-acre estuarine marsh mudflat habitat located in the Snohomish River estuary.
“Any time you talk about the environment you’re talking about the future, our kids,” said Senior Chief Logistics Specialist Donnie DeLeon, from Carson, California, who volunteered at Union Slough. “The more we do now, the more we do to make our kid’s futures and our whole lives better.”
DeLeon and other volunteers spent the day removing invasive blackberry plants to make room for natural vegetation to return to the area.
NSE also held an Earth Day dumpster dive event, April 19, to spread awareness and teach proper recycling habits.
“We want to focus on what we’re throwing away, how we can educate everybody about putting it in the correct containers,” said Denise Lesniak, the integrated solid waste manager for NSE.
Sailors from NSE and USS Kidd (DDG 110) donned protective suits, gloves and eyewear and sorted through the contents of a garbage bin on one of NSE’s piers.
Many of the items thrown away as garbage ended up being recyclable.
“It was pretty eye opening,” said Cryptologic Technician (Technical) Seaman Apprentice Riley Martin, from Nashville, Tennessee. “Admittedly I put recyclables in the trash can without thinking about it but seeing all this is pretty weird.”
Martin added that participating in the dumpster dive event has inspired him to be more mindful about recycling in the future.
NSE was recognized as a winner of the 2018 Secretary of the Navy Environmental Awards for efforts to support environmental sustainability throughout the past two years.
The team's wide-ranging achievements included diverting over 50% of waste streams through recycling, reducing energy use by 10%, and upgrading spill prevention and response training.
“We have really good participation throughout all of our commands on base,” said Lesniak. “We just want to take it to the next level.”
