SAN DIEGO (NNS) – Amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4) won first place for the second year in a row in the fourth-annual Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Cup competition, April 13, at the Admiral Prout multi-purpose field.

Commands participated in 12 competitive events to bring awareness and show support for those who have been affected by sexual assault in the Navy and Department of Defense.

"I am absolutely pleased with this year’s turnout." said Capt. Roy Love, commanding officer of NBSD. "We had 25 teams compete this year. Last year we had just over 20 teams. It’s extremely important to raise awareness about a big problem that we have. We consider all the things we can do right to help those who go through this. This event is one of the things that can make a difference."

Events like the SAPR Cup increase familiarity and awareness of accessible resources for those affected by sexual assault and can help Sailors recognize that they have the ability to take action.

"It’s a really fun event that increases awareness to an uncomfortable topic," said Olivia Zecchini, Boxer’s sexual assault response coordinator (SARC). "It’s a great way to bring us all together to discuss the importance of sexual assault awareness in our Navy. I like the comradery and competition that I see with all of the commands."

Boxer Sailors attended the event to defend the title and prove once again that they are the best team on the waterfront.

"Boxer Sailors strive for excellence in everything they do," said Chief Operations Specialist Tiffany Palmer, a Boxer SAPR point of contact. "There’s no surprise we won a second time in a row. We always find an excuse to win.”

Boxer placed in several events such as tug-of-war, sit-ups, pull-ups, mile run, and the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays, stressing the importance of comradery and teamwork to win the cup for a second straight year.

“Coming to an event like this shows that we are willing to put ourselves out there and compete for people that have been affected by this problem,” said Religious Program Specialist 3rd Class Kenon Jenkins, one of Boxer's runners in the 4x100-meter relay race. “We look out for our shipmates. That’s why our team comes out on top.”

Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) is celebrated every April with a goal of achieving a culture free of sexual assault through an environment of prevention, education and training, response capability, victim support, reporting procedures, and appropriate accountability that enhances safety and wellbeing.

This year's SAAPM theme is "Protecting Our People Protects Our Mission." For more information on the Navy's SAPR program visit http://www.navy.mil/local/sapr/
