DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. – Joey Logano, driver of the No. 22 Ford in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, landed at Dover AFB April 11, 2018, for a short tour showcasing the day-to-day teamwork and capabilities of Team Dover.

Logano’s stop in Dover, Delaware was associated with NASCAR’s Victory Tour, where drivers are paired with particular race tracks such as the Dover International Speedway.

His five-hour visit to the base started off with a photo opportunity for local media and Dover Motorsports, Inc. personnel in front of the main gate, then raced off to the 436th Maintenance Squadron fabrication flight, 436th Operations Support Squadron aircrew flight equipment facilities, lunch at the Patterson Dining Facility, the 436th Aerial Port Squadron, and the 436th Security Forces Squadron Military Working Dog Section.

“It was a pleasure to host Joey for the tour of Dover AFB in conjunction with our friends at Dover International Speedway,” said Dawne Nickerson-Banez, 436th Airlift Wing Public Affairs community engagement chief. “Events like this continue to solidify our partnerships with the local community. It also allows us to convey a message of the mission here at Dover AFB, and the Airmen who perform that mission.”

Highlighting the Fabrication Flight’s Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machining capabilities, Airman 1st Class Lance Kielbaso, 436th MXS aircraft metals technology apprentice, presented Logano with an eagle on a globe made by the fabrication flight from stainless steel scrap metal.

“We had a total of eight people involved and tried to give everyone a small part in making it,” said Kielbaso.

Taking the time to visit and speak with Fabrication Flight personnel, Logano gained a fan.

“It was an honor,” Kielbaso said, commenting on presenting Logano the eagle. “I haven’t been a fan of any particular racer until now, I think he definitely won me over as a fan.”

The next stop was a tour of the 436th OSS AFE facilities given by Staff Sgt. Christopher Sharlow, oxygen section NCO in charge. Before leaving, Logano answered questions from local media in attendance during a press conference and commented on his visit so far to the base.

“When you see the amount of detail, work and sacrifice that our military puts in for us, it’s pretty impressive and it’s amazing,” Logano said. “I think these moments when you are able to come and meet some individuals that are fighting for us and see the back parts of their job and everything they do to prepare and be ready for combat at any moment, it’s impressive and it’s the least we can do to shake their hand and say thank you.”

The last two stops of the day were at the 436th APS where he met “Port Dawgs” and autographed “hero” cards; and the 436th SFS facilities where Logano donned a protective bite suit prior to being taken down by MWD Karlo, an 80-pound Belgian Malinois.

With local media present during his visit and him seeing only a fraction of what Team Dover does, Nickerson-Banez noted “Mr. Logano has a strong presence in NASCAR and on social media, and hopefully he will share his experiences with his followers.”

Approximately five miles north of the base, Dover International Speedway, also known as “The Monster Mile,” is the site of three scheduled NASCAR races May 4-6 and three more races October 5-7, that bring NASCAR drivers to Dover, allowing some the opportunity to visit the base and meet Team Dover and family members.
