SUNRISE, Fla. and SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Navy Recruiting District Miami (NRD) welcomed the commander of Navy Recruiting Command (NRC), April 9-12.
Rear Adm. Peter Garvin, commander, NRC, met with Sailors, toured facilities in Fort Lauderdale and Puerto Rico, and took the opportunity to discuss the command’s Puerto Rico-based Sailors’ lives on the island after recovering from Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
During the course of his visit, NRD Miami’s chain of command provided Garvin with a unit command brief discussing the district’s highlights including production trends, command initiatives, and our Sailors’ and civilians’ quality of life in Puerto Rico.
The admiral also addressed Sailors in the Fort Lauderdale area during a session after recognizing Sailors for production excellence.
“It is obvious when you walk into a district if it has high morale, great comraderie, and teamwork and I felt that upon my arrival here at NRD Miami,” said Garvin. “I thank you all for what you do every day. Additionally, I want our family in Puerto Rico to know that nobody is forgotten and that if there is anything that I can do for you, I want to do it because that is what family is all about.”
NRD Miami’s leadership shared in the admiral’s lauding of the district’s Sailors and civilians and looked forward to displaying the command’s progress to date.
“We are elated to welcome [Rear] Admiral Garvin to see how our Sailors seamlessly execute our mission day in and day out,” said Cmdr. Delmy Robinson, NRD Miami commanding officer. “Our Sailors are flexible and resilient, and have consistently demonstrated that they can meet and exceed expectations in the face of adversity,” said Robinson. “Our Puerto Rico-based Sailors haven’t missed a beat in providing remarkable recruiting services to the local community and continue to contract the best and the brightest candidates for naval service. We continue to move our recruiting mission forward in Puerto Rico through our community outreach with local civic organizations, and through volunteering in the community to help rebuild the local infrastructure to help regain a sense of normalcy on the island.”
The district’s four Puerto Rico stations are all operational and open for business as usual. Garvin was able to meet with Sailors from each station, and discuss their needs.
“We are excited that the admiral is visiting our area of responsibility to meet the recruiters here in Puerto Rico,” said Aviation Ordinanceman 1st Class Kevin Negron, a Navy Recruiting Station (NRS) Caguas, Puerto Rico recruiter. “Puerto Rico is strongly coming back together as a family and everyone is helping each other out to stand back up again. We can see how things are getting back to normal and how people are back into their routines. Recruiting in Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria has seen an increase of people that want to be part of the same team that provided the assistance needed in their time of need.”
"No matter our circumstances, we have a job to do and are devoted to our mission here at Navy Recruiting District Miami,” said Chief Damage Controlman Raul Rodriguez, an officer recruiter stationed in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. “We are also bound to this community and it warms our hearts to be able to provide a fulfilling career to the people of Puerto Rico. Our Sailors work hard and continue to prove that Puerto Rico is strong and can bounce back from anything.”
Puerto Rico is part of NRD Miami’s Division 7, which consists of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The territory assigned to the district spans 54,252 square miles in Florida, 3,515 square miles in Puerto Rico and 133 square miles in USVI.
The mission of the command is to recruit high quality, diverse Future Sailors to meet the strategic manning requirements of America’s Navy.
The entire territory covers three major metropolitan areas in Florida including Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Miami, as well as the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
