UNIONTOWN, Ohio – One Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Ohio Sailor and Future Sailor save unresponsive man, April 11, at Green Family YMCA.
Utilitiesman 1st Class Kevin Yaksich Hubbard Ohio native and Future Sailor Quenten Cipra, Berea, Ohio native, answered the call from YMCA staff requesting CPR assistance after an elderly man was found on a treadmill unresponsive.
“I was finishing up usual paperwork when the YMCA staff came running yelling, if anyone knew how to perform CPR,” said Yaksich. “Future Sailor Quenten Cipra and I said, ‘we do’ and followed the staff member into cardio and weight room where we found an unresponsive man.”
With the help of an on scene Army medic, Yaksich and Cipra proceeded to remove the man from the treadmill where the medic performed compressions. Yaksich took charge of the scene directing others to call 911, locate a breathing mask and Cipra to get an automated external defibrillator (AED).
“When Future Sailor Cipra returned with the AED, we both opened it and turned it on and correctly placed the pads on the man,” said Yaksich. “We continued to administer CPR until the lifeguard showed up with CPR mask and shifted into 30:2 compressions to rescue breaths. We continued until local paramedics from Green Fire arrived and took over.”
Captain William Cox, Commodore Region East was impressed with the quick response from Yaksich and Cipra in a situation that saved someone’s life stating, “Our Sailors are shining examples of the best humanity has to offer.”
Green YMCA extended their gratitude; had it not been for the courageous acts of Yakisch and Cipra, the outcome may have been different.
“We later found out the man did survive and that’s what really matters,” said Yaksich.
As part of their training and qualifications, all Navy recruiters are required to receive and regularly update their CPR training. According to the American Heart Association, CPR saves more than 92,000 lives a year.
“We are all very proud of the courageous and honorable actions of Petty Officer Yasich’s actions truly embody our core values of honor, courage and commitment,” said Cmdr. Benjamin Martin, NRD Ohio commanding officer. “Training and preparation allows us always be ready to answer the call no matter when it comes.”
Future Sailor Cipra is in the Navy’s Delayed Entry Program (DEP) as a contracted Navy Special Warfare Operator (SO).
The mission of NRD Ohio is to recruit the highest qualified Future Sailors to meet the strategic manning requirements of America’s Navy.
