U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Walla Walla District

The Corps responses to engaging our youth in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math is to be present and accessible. So when the opportunity presented itself, Simeon Francis, a civil engineer with the Corps’ Walla Walla District invited his coworker Margie McGill, a chemical engineer, to speak with him to students enrolled in the Advancement Via Individual Determination program. (AVID)

Edlyn Carvajal, a junior at Walla Walla High School explains, “AVID is a program, for students it helps with getting into college and having the resources you need so when you get into college you will be prepared, like taking notes, becoming organized and just having that background to help you during college.”

Students like Edlyn participating in the AVID program have high academic potential, and the program helps them gain life skills. It provides them mentorship with tutors, and motivation through field trips, goal setting activities and guest speakers like Simeon and Margie.

Citlaly Gutierrez Fuentes, an AVID tutor at Walla Walla High School explains why AVID Teachers and Tutors decided to bring the Corps personnel to speak to their students.
“We want to inspire them to become engineers in the future and give them that real-world lesson. That high school is hard, but you get through it”.

Simeon Francis participated in STEM and community outreach for seven years and he views his time spent speaking with students as an opportunity to empower our youth.
“These days there is not a lot of positive investment in the schools regarding outsiders. It is the teachers and whatever the students bring to the table. But here with reaching out to students, there’s another component that can help in triggering them with interest or just giving them some stimuli. So they can say ‘You know what, I never really thought about that.’ ” Simeon pauses, “but here is just a crossing that took place and because I was willing to be a part of that and partner with Walla Walla high school. I feel that it’s a great contribution to the community to the students to the teachers and then hopefully over all in time an increase in their quality of life.”

The guest speakers are welcomed by students like Kaysa Villa Gomez, a junior at Walla Walla High School. “I think that all of the people that have talked to me have inspired me just to keep going, because I sometimes struggle in school and once I get motivated again by them I get working again, so that I can be on task. “

The Corps aspires to provide a spirited momentum in preparing students for life’s challenges by encouraging our youth, and those that support them, in our community locally and globally.
